From Valencia to the Albufera Coast
If you like beautiful beaches, a splash of city culture, paella at its freshest and deliciously gentle scenic cycling, then this tour from vibrant Valencia into the vast nature reserve of Albufera has to be for you. The university city is a great colourful mix of medieval and ultra-modern architecture just made for exploring by bike, but venture south down dedicated coastal cycle paths to the outstretched waters of the Laguna de L’Albufera and the rice fields of Spain and you could be in pedalling paradise. The beautiful beach-side Parador El Saler makes for a rewarding retreat complete with spa and golf course as well as a great base for circular tours inland to ‘rice capital’, Sueca, or down to Cullera, where flatlands and mountains meet by the Mediterranean. Overview
Be a culture vulture in Valencia, then flock down to see the herons by the Laguna de L’Albufera on this linear tour along the Mediterranean coast packed full of authentic Spanish treats. The beaches are beautiful; the local paellas out of this world and the cycling super-gentle. Traffic-free, segregated cycle paths stretch practically door to door between our especially selected accommodation, and day circuit options both inland and to the coast stick mostly to quiet country lanes.
Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive & explore
Arriving in Valencia, even culture vultures will find it hard to take their pick from the vast array of classic and contemporary offerings in this city! Based in the historic quarter, it’s easy to hunt out the cathedral of Santa Maria de Valencia, the great remains of the medieval ramparts – the ‘Torres de Serranos’ and ‘Torres de Quart’ – and impressively colourful covered market place, but take time to explore the tiny streets and discover the historic silk exchange, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tapas at a terrace café have to be on the menu, but so too the Turia Gardens which stretch out towards the strikingly contemporary, landmark structures of the City of Arts and Sciences.
Overnight in Valencia.
Day 2 From the city to the Albufera Coast
The coast is calling, so set off through the Turia Gardens and City of Arts and Sciences, down the dedicated cycle path which leads alongside little beaches or platjas to the 3,000 hectare freshwater expanse of the Laguna de L’Albufera. Home to some of Spain’s most memorable sunsets, it’s a natural paradise that’s brimful of birdlife and just right for a boat trip.
Stop off at El Palmar, with its rustic Valencian architecture and little black-sailed fishing boats for an outing on the water, or perhaps a taste of freshly prepared crayfish. Finally the beach beckons in real Spanish style, with your stay for the next two nights planned at a unique Parador right on the coast but in the heart of the Albufera nature reserve.

Day 3 Choice of circular routes to Sueca or Cullera
With its beach-side location, great golf course and relaxing spa facilities, you’d be forgiven for wanting to chill out in the warmth of the Mediterranean breeze, but with the local terrain making for the gentlest sort of cycling and the most amazing views, who can resist another little outing on two wheels
Circular tour to Sueca
This leads across the outstretched farmlands of the Albufera, whose colours change with the seasons and whose irrigation channels attract many different bird species. At La Muntanyeta del Sants, there’s an excellent look-out point across the rice paddies and over towards the fine sandy beaches before the route continues on to Sueca, Albufera’s capital of the rice industry. The final stretch loops back to the coast to El Perellonet, located between two water outlets or ‘Golas’ and heads back up along the coast to the Parador El Saler.
Miles: 26 Kms: 42
Circular tour to Cullera
Head south along the coast past El Perellonet and weave your way inland across the Albufera before dropping down to Cullera, the coastal city near the mouth of the River Xúquer. Don’t miss the perfect Mediterranean panoramas at the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Castillo or the opportunity to enjoy one of the wonderful beaches. The route heads back inland along country lanes to rejoin the coast at El Perellonet for the final stage back to the Parador El Saler.
Miles: 37-42 Kms: 60-67
Day 4 Depart after breakfast
Sadly it’s time to depart after breakfast, or perhaps take time for one last walk along the beach, a dip in the Med or maybe even a final round of golf!
If you fancy enjoying the hospitality of the Parador a little longer or exploring even more of the Albufera Natural Park, why not stay an extra night at Parador El Saler? Just give us a call and ask for Tour SVA5.
Extra nights can also be booked to allow more time to explore Valencia.
