Take in all of Germany’s Elbe River Cycle Path best bits on this short and gentle river-hugging ride through some spectacular Saxony scenery. Starting just inside the Czech Republic in Děčin, you’ll soon see why Romantic composer, Chopin, found the area quite an inspiration as you pedal northwards out along the Elbe into Germany, flanked by the sandstone outcrops of ‘Saxon Switzerland’. With almost every river meander, the clifftop castles keep appearing all the way to pretty Pirna, then come the vineyard terraces on the approach to the city of Dresden. Visit its Royal Palace and delightful Zwinger Gardens before cycling on to Meissen’s more rugged Albrechtsburg Castle, the original home of the city’s world-famous porcelain factory. A visit to both is a must – the lofty castle has awesome views (and a panoramic lift to reach it!) and the State Porcelain Workshops give a superb insight into the history of the town’s ‘white gold’.
In Děčin, Pirna, Dresden and Meissen.
Enjoy a real symphony of superb scenery adorned with beautiful Baroque flourishes. Explore the Czech Republic’s gorgeous ‘Golden City’ of Prague in the Vltava Valley with its Mozart connections, then cycle north to meet the meanders of the Elbe at Mělník on the Bohemian Wine Road. Pass Dvorák’s birthplace and share in the sheer drama of precarious clifftop castles and fairytale towns nestling in the wooded slopes, their market-square façades rich in colourful swirls or topped with fanciful cupolas. Near today’s German border, you’ll soon understand why Děčin was one of Chopin’s favourite inspirational spots, being the gateway to the mighty sandstone outcrops of ‘Saxon Switzerland’. Cycling the Elbe River Cycle Path, it’s easy to criss-cross the river by means of bridges and local ferries to visit the numerous villas and vantage points along the route to the city of Dresden with its Royal Palace, once home to so many famous court composers.
In Prague (2 nights), Mělník, Litoměřice, Děčin, Bad Schandau / Pirna and Dresden.
Fine Meissen porcelain and Dresden palaces; scenic steam railway rides and river views; ‘Saxon Switzerland’s’ rocky sandstone outcrops; world-class garden realms and Bauhaus buildings – pedal the Elbe River Path north from health resort Bad Schandau to design-giant Dessau and there’s so much more to discover than just the varied valley scenery from clifftop castles to gentle floodplain gardens. Criss-cross the river by bridge or local ferry to take in monasteries and mills or fairytale towns tucked away in the wooded slopes. Get a taste for German history too - from Baroque churches and breweries, to the Saxon Wine Road or life and times of that great religious reformer, Martin Luther. A wonderful tour of contrasts, with something for everyone, on a great cycle path. Why not book an e-bike and come and enjoy the ride all the more?
In Bad Schandau, Dresden, Meissen, Riesa/ Strehla, Torgau, Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Dessau.
