Cycle The Rebellion Way around Norfolk

Cycle Breaks have been organising Norfolk bike tours for leisure cyclists since 1991 and arranging bespoke Rebellion Way tours for customers since 2023. Now, we’re delighted to extend our offer in East Anglia to support dedicated, faster-paced cyclists with on- and off- road experience, who may prefer more of a DIY approach to a multi-day ride like The Rebellion Way.

We also offer fully organised Rebellion Way cycle tour packages – ideal for those wanting to rise to the challenge of a longer distance self-guided adventure, at their own pace and with the minimum of hassle. Check out our handy range of bike hire, bag transfer and mechanical support service options for Rebellion Way cyclists too. However independent or adventurous your Rebellion Way plans, whether you are looking to go solo or team up with the tribe, Cycle Breaks can help make your self-guided tour an even easier ride.

So who are the rebels? Norfolk’s feisty folk go back 2,000 years to Queen Boudicca and the Iceni tribe from the area around Thetford, who revolted against Roman rule. A later son of Thetford, Thomas Paine (b.1737), penned ‘The Rights of Man’ and is hailed ‘The Father of the American Revolution’. Another Thomas, Lord Coke Earl of  Leicester (b.1754) from Holkham Hall turned agricultural practices on their head, whilst King’s Lynn born, Captain George Vancouver (b 1757), left his mark on the New World. Robert Kett lead Kett’s Rebellion against land enclosure (1549). marching 10,000-strong on the city of Norwich.

A 230 mile cycling adventure

The Cycle Breaks Rebellion Way route uses our in depth local knowledge of little lanes, dedicated trackways and fabulous Norfolk places to visit alongside the original Rebellion Way, which incorporates Boudicca Way sections where accessible by bike. The mapped route is only intended as a guide, designed to support our fully organised  Rebellion Way bike holiday packages. It can be altered and refined to include other local destinations in the Norfolk Broads, inland Norfolk or along the West or North Norfolk coastlines.

Highlights along The Rebellion Way

The Cycle Breaks Rebellion Way route links all the sites connected with Norfolk’s rebellious characters together as you push your pedals around the county – and it reveals all the sides of  Norfolk’s wildly contrasting countryside, from its unique Norfolk Broads landscapes to the creek-crazed, super-sandy coast.

Cycle through Boudicca’s homelands in the heathy Brecks. Spot Tom Paine in Thetford town centre or Captain Vancouver by King’s Lynn quay. Look out for Kett’s Heights, or stop to visit Coke’s mighty fine Palladian pad, Holkham Hall.

Norfolk is Horatio Nelson’s county too, and the route touches upon his North Norfolk birthplace, childhood sailing grounds, and schooldays in the fine city of Norwich, which is brimful of medieval churches and awesome architecture. The historic pilgrimage village of Walsingham is a lost-in-time must, and there are plenty of tasty treats for foodies, from Broadland beers to Cromer crabs and delicate rock samphire.
